Summary Media Servers Report
Date Posted: April 8, 2010
Abstract: BCcampus has investigated possibilities for a YouTube-like service for educational content in B.C.
Students are learning from their textbooks, in the classroom and the lab, but they're not getting all their coursework done by traditional means. With information gathering trending towards participatory media and social software (like YouTube and Blip.tv) students and instructors are increasingly using content generated by their peers and others as formal requirements to completing their courses. There is a concern that, because of the implications of the Patriot Act, these U.S.-based services may not comply with of B.C.'s Privacy legislation if used in the context of formal academic work.

Creating a Sustainable Online Consortium
Date Posted : September 26, 2006
Abstract: High-quality, accessible education and lifelong learning are cornerstones of the quality of life that Canadians have come to expect. Being able to access the growing number of educational options online has also become increasingly important to students in all stages of their educational and career development. To meet this need BCcampus was created in 2002. This online educational portal connects students through a single secure sign-on process to higher education resources offered by all British Columbia public post-secondary institutions. BCcampus facilitates online access to the provincial online application service (PASBC), program and course information, registration services, course delivery services, library services, and other student services. It also provides educators with access to communities of practice and a repository of reusable instructional resources ( http://solr.bccampus.ca SOL*R webpage ). This paper documents the BCcampus development process and its strategy for sustainability.
