Building for the Future: Remote Web-Based Science Labs and NANSLO

This week finds the BCcampus team immersed in the world of Remote Web-based Science Laboratory (RWSL) learning with two back-to-back meetings with key thought-leaders from across the province and the United States.

ScienceThe BC RWSL meeting brings together the top innovators from North Island College and Thompson Rivers University to share their thinking, research and understanding of how to make science more accessible to learners across British Columbia. Funding from BCcampus supports both projects.

Four key questions will be considered:

  1. What does the future of RWSL look like for British Columbia and what opportunities exist for collaboration?
  2. How does participation in NANSLO contribute to the future?
  3. How to promote the use of RWSL in other BC institutions?
  4. How to build capacity?

The NANSLO Summit takes place the following day with strong emphasis placed on building for future successes including:

  • research, pedagogical considerations and appropriate use of technology,
  • expanding partnerships, and
  • reaching out to other industries and foundations.

A detailed update will be provided in early March.

What’s the connection between RWSL and NANSLO?

NANSLO builds on the success of the Remote Web-based Science Laboratory (RWSL) developed by BCcampus, a consortium of 25 post-secondary institutions in British Columbia that are participating in the project. NANSLO also serves students attending Colorado Community College System (CCCS) institutions. Students enrolled in the 13 CCCS community colleges have access to three freshman-level courses, with labs modeled after those developed by BCcampus.
